By: Camden Bruno, Air Traffic Manager

Our ARTCC has recently been approached by leadership from our closet neighbor, the New York ARTCC (ZNY). Specifically, New York has sought our opinion on the potential of a closer working relationship in which controllers would be able to cross-certify for positions in either ARTCC.

Our websites and TeamSpeak server would be combined, and effectively our two organizations would work much more closely together. While we are not calling this a “merger”, it does represent the potential for ZBW and ZNY to work closer than ever before.

As you know, the New York ARTCC is our closest neighbor. The ARTCC provides coverage for the New York City metro area, as well as airports in New York State, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding area. It provides coverage at KPHL, and borders Washington (ZDC) and Cleveland (ZOB). There are more than 140 New York ARTCC controllers that would bring a further injection of activity into our already-busy ARTCC.

One of the biggest benefits for our community is web design. The New York ARTCC has a wealth of website expertise, and is willing to share their roster and facility management code with us. This partnership would enable us to re-create the air traffic control components of our website, making it easier for controllers and the training staff to administer the ATC side of our community.

With Project Vector less than a year old, we recognize that it’s pretty soon for this type of discussion amongst the community. For that reason, we want to gather an idea about our members’ opinions of such a partnership before moving forward with any additional discussion with ZNY. Based on your feedback, we’ll continue the discussion with ZNY to determine if their partnership is something we want to pursue any further.

Please complete a brief survey of your reactions to ZNY’s proposal. The survey will be open until April 15.

Please note that this proposal has not yet been discussed openly with ZNY controllers. We ask our members to keep the news amongst our own community for the time being.

BVA's ATC Instructor Team Welcomes Back Kyle Rosenquist
By Evan Reiter, Training Administrator

The Air Traffic Control staff at Boston Virtual ARTCC is delighted to welcome Kyle Rosenquist (RS) back as an ATC Instructor and VATSIM I1. RS has been one of the most active Center controllers over the past few months. When he’s not on ZBW, he can be found working with students or challenging our controllers with turbojet operations into uncontrolled and mountainous airports across our ARTCC.

Kyle’s involvement in our community dates back to 2006. In fact, not many people know that Kyle was actually one of the first Instructors who taught me to control when I began to get serious about online aviation. It’s a pleasure to have him back on our staff.

Charted Visual Approaches
Last month's question was: "Are there any weather minimums for the Tuckernuck Visual RWY 6 approach at Nantucket, and if so, what are they?"

The correct answer is - yes, there are! Looking at the approach plate, you can find in the top right corner the section on weather minimums. They are: (a) 2100 foot ceiling, and (b) 5 mile visibility. Remember that you cannot fly this procedure when the control tower is closed! However, this often isn't an issue on the network, as the overlying controller will almost always provide tower services.

Challenge Question: What are the precipitation and sky conditions in this METAR?

The answer to the challenge question will be included in next month's Pilot Tip.

Each month, we run a contest on our forums to determine who has the best flight simulator screenshot. This month, Alec Liberman has won with his shot from a 737 flight deck of a 6 mile final to Runway 27 at Boston.
