Boston Virtual ARTCC is unique within VATSIM in that—to our knowledge—we are VATSIM’s only ARTCC that has a formal community comprised of both pilots and controllers. Naturally, the structure of our administration is as unique as the organization itself.

This month, we are proud to formally recognize that structure with the release of a new page on our website that provides contact information and biographies for the people who donate their time to help make Boston Virtual ARTCC the organization it is.

The Boston Virtual ARTCC administration is led by three roles. The Air Traffic Manager is primarily responsible for the air traffic control organization. That individual oversees controllers, and also works with the Deputy Air Traffic Manager, Facilities Engineer, and Events Coordinator to manage our ATC roster, ensure our technology is up-to-date, and plan and execute events with air traffic control.

Meanwhile, the Community Manager is responsible for the pilot and controller aspect of the organization. This role ensures that everything we do—ATC, events, training, and sub-communities like Cape Air Virtual and our military—has the pilot and controller community at heart. The Community Manager works with the Website Administrator to ensure that our technology meets the needs of our growing organization.

Finally, the Training Administrator sits between these roles, and is responsible for developing pilot and air traffic control training across the organization.

This month, we feature Nantucket (KACK), one of the many gateways to Cape Cod. The incredibly scenic island airport is one of the top destinations for Cape Air Virtual, and also features seasonal service from jetBlue, various regional airlines, and a large volume of private jets. The promise of a memorable vacation makes Nantucket one of the busiest airports in the state, particularly during the summer months.

BVA Introduces "Airport of the Month"
By: Evan Reiter, Training Administrator

Starting with Nantucket this month, we’ll be featuring one of the controlled airports in ZBW throughout the year. The Airport of the Month will receive extra attention from controllers, and we encourage pilots to make it a hub in their virtual flight operations.

The Airport of the Month will be included in each month’s Logan Informer, and published on the ATC Timetable page of our website. In addition to being a centerpiece of our regular ATC operations, the Airport of the Month will also be featured in at least one of that month’s event.

Tea Party is less than Two Weeks Away!
By: Clif Whitten, Events Coordinator

We are less than two weeks away from one of BVA's biggest annual events! The 2016 Boston Tea Party takes place a week from Saturday, on August 13, from 12-7pm ET. During the event, we staff up almost every airport in ZBW. In addition to full coverage at KBOS, you'll find local ATC and radar coverage at airports across our ARTCC.

During the event, pilots are encouraged to try their luck at Tea Party Poker, a mock poker game that allows pilots to engage in friendly completion for some terrific prizes from REX, ActiveSky, and more!

For each landing within the Boston ARTCC, the pilot may request to dealt a card(s). At the end of the event, the pilots with the best poker hands win!  There are certain restrictions that apply to intra-TRACON flights, landing at uncontrolled airfields, and VFR operations. The full set of rules is listed on our website; you are highly encouraged to review them if participating in the game.

Please visit the Boston Tea Party page of our website to find out more information about the event and to learn how you can participate in Airport Poker.

Cape Air Virtual's Pilot of the Month is:

Dave Maze (KAP483)

with over 25 hours flown this month alone.
BVA's ATC Instructors have recognized:

Chris Raabe (RB), S2

as Air Traffic Controller of the month for his outstanding dedication and service.

RNAV Departures
Last month's question was:

What RNAV departure can a turbojet aircraft not file when departing KBOS?

The correct answer is: the WYLYY TWO (WYLYY2). This departure is applicable for runway 27 only and is rarely, if ever, used. This chart is peculiar in quite a few ways. Primarily, it will only be assigned by air traffic control; one of the notes at the top of the chart specifically states, "ATC assigned. Do not file." Next, the SID is a combination of RNAV and radar vectors; it takes the plane south of the main city, after which ATC will vector the plane to the assigned departure fix. Lastly, like all departures out of KBOS except for the LOGAN1, it is turbojet only, meaning propeller-driven aircraft cannot fly the departure.

Challenge Question: When a controller issues radar traffic information in relation to the 12-hour clock, the controller references the aircraft's
A) true course
B) magnetic heading
C) ground track

The answer to the challenge question will be included in next month's Pilot Tip.

Each month, we run a contest on our forums to determine who has the best flight simulator screenshot. This month, we have two winners! Sean Doyle strikes again (including an honorable mention to First Officer Nils Backe) with a Horizon Q400 on the climbout, and Camden caught his King Air flashing its beacon on the departure out of KACK!
