BVA is many things. We’re an ARTCC on VATSIM. We’re a community of pilots and controllers, working together to create a realistic ATC environment. But what is it that makes the community so special? Why do we join events, hop in a puddle-jumper, or fly a Boeing 787 into a Class E airport? What is it that really makes us fly?

Every year, our Administration could not be prouder of the many pilots, controllers, and volunteers who make BVA what it is. While it’s never possible to recognize everyone, sharing the names of a few of the people who dedicate their time to making BVA the place it is only seems fitting when we talk about the success BVA has achieved this year.

Boston - Halifax Crossfire: "The Boston Christmas Tree"
By: Clif Whitten, Events Administrator

We’re kicking off our new year of events with an international flair featuring a cross-border, cross-fire event with Moncton FIR.

Since 1971, the official Boston Christmas Tree has been donated to the people of Boston by the people of Nova Scotia in appreciation for the assistance given in the aftermath of a devastating explosion that destroyed the City of Halifax in 1917. In honor of that tradition, our event will feature Boston’s Logan Airport (KBOS) and Halifax’s Stanfield International Airport (CYHZ). Our preferred routes will follow closely the voyage that the Christmas tree makes each year; through Nova Scotia, across the Bay of Fundy, continuing through Maine and New Hampshire to Boston.

We hope that you’ll join us on Monday, January 2nd, from 7-11 pm ET, either in the air or on the scope for an exciting night of internationally comradery.

2016 Christmas Poem
By: Alec Liberman, Logan Informer & Chief Poet

Every year, for the past three years, one of our community members, Alec Liberman, has written a rhyming poem about the organization and has released it around Christmas. This year is no different!

Alec has carried on the tradition with a poem entitled “Christmas at ZBW: 2016 Edition”; the first two stanzas are below, and the rest can be found here. Happy reading!

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the sky
Only two or three pilots decided to fly.
For a cold eve, it was; IMC, too -
Gray sheets of fog replaced welcoming blue.

It was off-peak time, close to eleven.
I was on Center, A90 was Evan.
Cam was on Tower, and Krikor on Ground,
That sky was so empty, we barely uttered a sound.

Suggested Runways for KBOS
By: Evan Reiter, Training Administrator

We’ve launched a new page of the website designed to show suggested runways in use at KBOS when air traffic control is offline. The page will help members and VATSIM pilots alike determine which runway should be used when landing without ATC.

The new page may be found under the ‘Pilots’ menu of our website.

Cape Air Virtual's Pilots of the Month are:

Marc L (KAP339)
Barry W (KAP345)
Dave M (KAP483)

with a 3-way-tie for first place. Next month's Pilot of the Month will be judged on most flights utilizing the new smartCARS.
BVA's ATC Instructors have recognized:

Zac Ploch, Class B Approach

as Air Traffic Controller of the month for his outstanding dedication and service.

Currency Requirements
Last month's question was:

What is a high-performance endorsement? What are its privileges, and what are the requirements to obtain one?

The correct answer is: a high-performance endorsement lets a person act as pilot in command of an aircraft with an engine of more than 200 horsepower. To receive such an endorsement, the person must have received and logged ground and flight intrusction from an authorized instructor in a high-performance airplane (or a representative flight training device), and have received a one-time endorsement in the pilot's logbook from an authorized instructor who certifies the pilot to be proficient to operate a high-performance airplane. See 14 CFR 61.31 for more details.

Challenge Question: What is a P-lead? Where is it located, what are its functions, and how does a pilot ensure that it is working properly?

The answer to the challenge question will be included in next month's Pilot Tip.

Each month, we run a contest on our forums to determine who has the best flight simulator screenshot. This month, we have a tie between Camden Bruno's Cape Air C402 into Lebanon and Alec Liberman's Delta 737-800 departing Boston!
