New Cape Air Website
By: Ernesto Muniz-Samalot, Cape Air Virtual Vice President

Cape Air Virtual has recently rolled out a new, large update for the community. This new update includes a modern upgrade to our flight tracking software: smartCARS! smartCARS provides new features for the pilots to utilize during their flights. A built-in radio streams an array of music from JetStreamRadio for our pilots to listen to during their preflight and throughout their flight--with the occasional DJ mashup on weekend haul. Moreover, this new flight tracker permits the pilots to view more in-depth details during the flight, with immediate feedback upon completing the flight.

Cross the Pond Westbound
By: Evan Reiter, Training Administrator

Save the date! Cross the Pond Westbound (Europe to North America) happens on March 25, 2017.

The airports that are featured in the event are chosen by a vote, which closed a few days ago. We will know shortly whether BOS is featured. However, either way, we know that we will be a big part of this event.

Save the date—March 25! Whether you decide to fly a tubeliner across the Atlantic or just want to do some local flying in the Northeast, it’ll be a busy day of ATC in ZBW!

Poll: ZBW Payware Airports
By: Phil Coyle, Community Manager

As you may know, iBlueYonder’s Bill Womack recently released Nantucket Memorial Airport for FSX/P3D. As part of the release, he provided our members with a 20% discount for a limited promotional period. Our members contributed a great deal to the release, and he would be willing to consider future development for our community.

iBlueYonder has asked that we conduct a poll regarding what airports inside ZBW our members would like to see developed as payware scenery. Although there's no guarantee Bill will pick our results as a future project, it will help him gauge where the interest is and what might work well moving forward.

Please visit our forums to participate in the poll.

2016 ZBW Activity
By: Evan Reiter, Training Administrator

BVA was the most active ARTCC across the entire VATSIM network in 2016. Our Center controllers worked more than 2,150 hours in 2016, and 11 full 24-hour days more than the next-active facility.

This month, VATUSA released traffic statistics for 2016. Boston (BOS) was the second-busiest airport in the Northeast, which includes New York, Washington, Chicago, Cleveland, and Indianapolis ARTCCs. Boston received 23,155 aircraft movements in 2016 (10,679 takeoffs and 12,476 landings). Overall, our ARTCC was the 2nd-busiest on the network, with more than 32,000 aircraft movements, or 22% of all traffic experienced by the 6 ARTCCs in the Northeast.

Airspeeds in Holds
Last month's question was:

You are given the following hold clearance. "American 418, cleared to the Pease VOR. Hold east of Pease, course 290, 20 DME to 30 DME. Maintain 8000." What is your maximum indicated airspeed while in the hold?
Bonus: what is special about this specific holding instruction?

The correct answer is: 230 KIAS. According to the FAR/AIM, the maximum indicated airspeed while in a hold between 6,000 and 14,000 feet MSL is 230 knots. Below 6,000 is 200 knots, and above 14,000 is 265 knots. This particular hold is special because it is the standard instruction an aircraft would receive if it needed to dump fuel while in Boston Approach's airspace. Reference: BOS ATCT/A90 SOP 6.3(a).

Challenge Question:
You are on an active IFR flight plan in IMC when you lose radio communications with ATC. Your last instruction was: "Cherokee 8ND, maintain 5,000, expect 7,000 in 10 miles." The enroute chart depicts an MEA of 4,000 feet for the route segment you are on. Do you need to climb or descend? If so, to which altitude?

The answer to the challenge question will be included in next month's Pilot Tip.

Each month, we run a contest on our forums to determine who has the best flight simulator screenshot. This month, Krikor Hajian submitted his shot of a 747 climbing into the sunset!
