This time next week, BVA members will be gathering at Flamingo Las Vegas Resort for FlightSimExpo 2018! The event now has 45 confirmed exhibitors, 20 speakers, and some of the biggest names in simulation: Aerosoft, Captain John Cox, FlightChops, Jason Miller, Jetline Systems, PMDG, Prepar3D, and many more!

But beyond anything else, FlightSimExpo is BVA’s biggest member meet-up of the year! Our Administration Team will be out in full force, and we look forward to seeing or meeting many of you there. We’re expecting more than 40 BVA members to make the trip to Vegas.

While most of us will probably end up hanging out all weekend anyway, we would like to invite everyone to the BVA Member Dinner! The details are:

  • Location: Margaritaville (inside Flamingo Las Vegas Resort)
  • Date: Saturday, June 9
  • Time: 8:30pm
  • Cost: $25 (free for anyone who volunteers at FlightSimExpo on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)

Most BVA members are arriving in Las Vegas beginning Thursday, June 7. For those who are available to help out, we’ll be meeting in the Sunset Ballroom at approximately 12:00pm on Friday, June 8 to help with registration and setup.

Following that, members are welcome to participate in Live Up America FNO, a VATUSA/VATSIM live event that will take place from the show floor on the evening Friday, June 8. Can’t attend FlightSimExpo in person? This FNO event is a great chance to participate from home! Control or fly on the network and you’ll be speaking to controllers who are working traffic live from Las Vegas.

As is often the case with live events, many of our members, controllers, and administrators will be attending FlightSimExpo. Pilots should be aware that online community activity may be slower than usual during this time. For support requests and other communications, please expect a slower-than-usual response time.

Boston Tea Party: August 11, 12-7pm ET
By: Krikor Hajian

Save the date: BVA’s 19th annual Boston Tea Party takes place on Saturday, August 11. For seven hours, controllers from BVA will come together in Nashua for a day of live and in person air traffic control! In addition to enjoying the staffing at Boston Logan (KBOS), we strongly encourage pilots to fly into the many regional airports in our airspace that will also be staffed. You can expect coverage at airports like Hartford-Bradley (KBDL), Providence (KPVD), Manchester (KMHT), Albany (KALB), and across Cape Cod.

As always, Boston Tea Party will feature Tea Party Poker, a competition that takes place during Tea Party. For each airport pilots land at, they get a card. Pilots with the best poker hand at the end of the event will have the chance to win great prizes from sponsors of the event.

Looking for more? Visit the Boston Tea Party page of our website for full details.

Member Discord
By: Camden Bruno

Last month, we launched Discord, a new way for members to connect. Like our existing Member TeamSpeak, Discord is designed to provide a social communication platform for members. It’s not a requirement to fly or participate in the community. However, it offers the ability for our members to connect, ask questions, and send private/direct messages, even when they aren’t flying or controlling.

TeamSpeak is a voice and chat program, while we have configured Discord as a text-only platform.

Members can find the server/connection information for TeamSpeak and Discord on the Social page of our website.

New to TeamSpeak or Discord? Visit our connection guides for TeamSpeak and Discord for more information on how to get started.

Airworthiness Directives (ADs)

Last month's question was:

Airworthiness Directives (ADs) are issued by the FAA to correct an unsafe condition in an aircraft, engine, propeller, or appliance. Are they a suggestion from the FAA, or are they mandatory to maintain airworthiness?

Answer: unlike service bulletins, Airworthiness Directives are mandatory. If a certified aircraft has an outstanding AD that has not been complied with, the aircraft cannot be considered airworthy. See 14 CFR Part 39 for more information.

Challenge Question: how does the stall speed of an aircraft in a 60-degree bank compare to the stall speed of an aircraft in straight-and-level flight? How does the load factor compare?

The answer to the challenge question will be included in next month's Pilot Tip.

May's screenshot contest winner will be featured alongside the June contest winner in the July edition of the Informer!
